  5. Monique Spalding says:

I have SSDI and I recently have decided to go back to work part-time starting in January 2013. I understand that I have a trial work period where I am allowed to earn as much as I want for 9 months, then after that period ends, I have to earn below $1040 a month in order to keep my SSDI. I just have a few questions on how Social Security calculates my Substantial Gainful Activity:

    1. I get paid bi-weekly (every other Thursday). I read online that they calculate my average monthly earnings by adding the two paychecks I receive a month together, then divide it by 2. Afterward, the resulting number is multiplied by 2.167. Can someone verify if this is true?

    Example: Let’s say, I get paid on January 17 ($380 before taxes) and January 31st ($440 before taxes). I assume Social Security will add the two checks up: 380+440 = 820. Then divide the sum by 2: 820 / 2 = 410. Afterward, multiply the result by 2.167: 410 x 2.167 = 888.47.

So my monthly SGA would be $888.47, right?

    2. Does SSA look at my income by the date I received my paycheck or by when I actually earned it?

Example: I get my paycheck on February 7 but my pay period was from January 18 – January 31. Does this pay count for February or for January?

    3. How do they determine the monthly income from my paychecks if the pay period on one of my paychecks begins near the end of the month and crosses over into the next month.

Example: The pay period starts from January 24 and extends up to February 7. Will this paycheck count for earnings January or February?

    4. What happens when there are months where I receive 3 bi-weekly paychecks? How do they calculate the monthly income?

Example: I get paid on the following dates March 2, March 16, and March 30. Will they simply add the three checks up, then divide the sum by 2. Then multiply the result by 2.167? Or is there a different formula for determining the SGA for the month.

I would call the Social Security office myself to get my answers but it’s Saturday and they are closed and my boss wants to know ASAP how many hours I’m willing to work but I can’t give him a proper answer until all my questions are answered. I want to work but I don’t want to jeopardize my current disability benefits. Any and all help is appreciated. Thank you.

I am not trying to “game the system.” I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2010 and I haven’t been employed since. I am enrolling in college for the Spring semester to get my bachelor’s but my disability benefits and financial aid isn’t enough to cover the tuition and books, so I need a part-time job to help pay for college expenses.

Thanks for the responses so far everyone (the “game the system” wasn’t directed at you, Achelios. It was toward David B.). I don’t want to live off SSDI forever, I eventually want to get my bachelor’s in computer science, get a full time job, and finally get off social security and live a normal adult life (I’m 24). However for the time being, I need SSDI because due to my mental illness, it was difficult for me to go to college (I had to drop out) and go to work (I was forced to resign).

But after two years of meds, therapy, and going to mental health rehabilitation groups, I feel that I have managed my mental illness to the point where I can go back to school full time and start working again (but this time only part-time at a minimum wage cashier job, $8.04 per hour, I figure it would be less responsibility, thus less stress). I’m planning on working around 20-25 hours a week, depending on if I feel okay enough to work a partic

    9) Do you want to pay monthly fees of $770 and receive nothing for it?
    10) Do you want to pay $40,000 to buy into the franchise in the first place? (which you borrow from the bank and then cannot pay back)
    11) Do you want to owe the bank more money than you can afford to pay back?
    12) Do you want to lose your marriage or relationship?
If you answered NO to any or all of these questions then the answer is YOU DO NOT WANT TO OWN A VIP FRANCHISE!!!!
Please I beg you if you are considering buying a VIP franchise, stop right now! You will regret it for the rest of your life, there is no money to be made in this business even if you are prepared to work. And if you make the mistake of buying a franchise you will NEVER be able to get out of it, they will hunt you to your grave! There is no way out, they will continue to harass you for money that you do not have, they will continue to demand that you pay for a ‘business’ that does not exist, you will have to pay monthly fees even if you are not working the ‘business’, they will continue to hound you. I beg you please DO NOT BUY A VIP FRANCHISE. Run now before you sign that piece of paper will forever bind you to them, it is like a marriage where there is no divorce, please run do not end up like us and all the others that have bought a VIP franchise and have lived to regret it. Before I leave you with these thoughts, I will tell you the story of one VIP franchisee whose wife ran away with his car and trailer, because their relationship broke up because of the stress and what did VIP say? They said it had nothing to do with them and that he still has to continue to pay the monthly fees and this man no longer has a trailer or car to work the business so he has to pay for nothing for 20 years, this company has no heart. IT WILL KILL YOU. Thank you for listening

  11. Marcie Thach says:

Thank you.

  22. Loretta Neale says:

If someone can please legitimately answer my questions, I would REALLY appreciate it. Thank you.

I know what work ethic is; I’ve worked hard all my life; I’m no slacker… But my workload is simply too much for one person and everything seems to need immediate attention. This is not acknowledged by Administration and additional help will not be approved. Even though I’m coming up on my 1 year anniversary with the company, when I explain in detail, the basic response is “If you can’t do it, we’ll just get someone else who will.” And it’s true; turnover is out of sight at this place. Prior to this, I was successful at my previous job for over 10 years. They hated to see me go… I took this job after relocating. I cannot continue to “do it all” but I need my income. However, I am looking for something else. In the meantime, does anyone have any super ideas to get more done in less time? Any suggested websites to visit to learn how to “work smarter, not harder”? 43. Loretta Neale says:

If someone can please legitimately answer my questions, I would REALLY appreciate it. Thank you.
