Sean Connery – The Best Secret Agent Of Them All?
Of course we all know the name of that secret agent. Don’t we? Connery. Sean Connery. A former male model (like Brad Pitt) who ascended to heights of International stardom he quite probably never imagined. Not bad for the child of a cleaning woman and a factory worker, eh?
As you might imagine Sean Connery’s path to stardom from his humble beginnings was a long, and often tedious one. His first job? A milkman in Edinburgh. Later, after a stint in the Royal Navy, he was employed as a truck driver, a lifeguard, a day labourer, and finally an artist’s model.
After these mundane occupations, young Sean began his performing career as many before him have done. “helping out” behind the scenes. In his case, the start was being a “go-fer” (as in “go for this – go for that”) in effect, an errand boy, at the King’s theatre in London in 1951.
From there, after meeting the actors and becoming more involved in the aspects of production, he began the slow and inevitable advancement that comes with the profession.
Up The Ladder… slowly
After appearing in a series of stage plays, The young Scot was going through a “rough patch” financially and was forced to accept a job as a babysitter for a well known journalist. However, this was to prove advantageous, as through that employment he met the Hollywood actress Shelly Winters.
Although she was very impressed with Sean, this connection didn’t directly result in any “instant stardom” opportunities. But it did increase awareness in media circles of Sean’s existence and abilities.
Eventually, Sean was able to say goodbye to his babysitting days, as small roles in television became available. From 1957 until 1961 he gradually ascended the “tv ladder”, climbing progressively higher with each production. This period of his career culminated in a co-starring role with Claire Bloom the BBC television film “Anna Karina” in 1961.
The Road Not Taken
In addition to his acting, Sean Connery has always had a long and passion love affair with football. And given his rugged stature and interest in bodybuilding, through a series of circumstances he was given the opportunity to turn professional. At the exact moment he was also offered the role of James Bond.
While he was reluctant to commit to a series, Connery was also realistic about the career lifespan of a footballer. Basically, “over the hill at 30.” At this time, Sean was 23. Obviously he could see there was a greater potential for a longer career – not to mention a more financially rewarding one – in a film series. And so – to the eventual delight of millions – Sean Connery became James Bond.
A Woman’s Touch
Winning the role of James Bond, however, was not “a piece of cake.” In fact, there were two powerful forces opposing that choice. The film’s producer, Albert “cubby” Broccoli, and..shock horror… Ian Fleming – the creator of the smooth and sexy secret agent himself! Connery was not the Bond he had envisaged. In fact Author Fleming characterized Connery as “an overgrown stunt man.”
The turning point for Sean’s candidature came from, as you might expect from a sexy secret agent, two Women. Dana Broccoli, the producer’s wife, who persuaded her husband that Sean did indeed have “the right stuff”, and Ian Fleming’s girlfriend, who, in her own way, said much the same thing.
And so, the deal was sealed. Happily after seeing Sean on the big screen in “Dr. No”, Fleming completely changed his evaluation. Becoming, like the rest of the World – a Connery fan.
