Are You Worthy of Being a Mentor?
My business partner Deb Lane and I were recently reminded of many things we have forgotten on our “whirlwind” journey to being Internet Rockstars. We were attending “Mindset Marketing Hour”, an online class hosted by Jerry Meyer in GVO Academy. Jerry’s guest was our good friend Josh Andrus, who shared the five (5) things to look for in a Mentor. As Josh went through his list one by one, elaborating on each topic, we started to remember why we were chosen for Internet Rock Stardom in the first place, and why we feel we strayed a bit from our responsibilities.
We have been attending GVO Academy classes for months and months, always taking an active part in discussion and sharing our own stories and ideas. Someone noticed. If you have been following our blog, you know our story and that it was Mark Call who singled us out, inviting us to be GVO Academy Instructors. Mark noticed our unique brand of Marketing and gave it a name – “Blog Fishing”. We’re glad he thought of that.
Now we find ourselves appointed mentors to a lot of people, many of whom find themselves without an active “Sponsor”. Folks who are eager to learn and take action to grow their home business, and up until now had no where to turn.
Mentoring is NOT about taking, but rather giving. It is NOT about getting in at the top of the latest and greatest program, only to pitch it to your large list of followers. Being a Mentor is about listening more, talking less. It is about working together for common good. Being a mentor is a huge responsibility, not to be taken lightly.
The two questions Josh asked which really made us start thinking were:
1. Do they have a giver’s heart and a teacher’s capability?
2. Do they operate in alignment with their value set?
These two attributes are sometimes hard for us Marketers to keep to. We get wrapped up in promoting and growing large downlines – it’s what we do and why we are here. We all have an agenda – “Join my business”, and because we are good at what we do, we DO grow large downlines. It’s what happens next that can make or break us. The money may be in the list, but relationships are in communication.
As for these two Marketers, we choose to remain true to our hearts and values. We choose to Sponsor and Mentor, not Recruit and move on. A wise man once told us, “It’s not always about making money, sometimes it’s about making a difference”. Remember that when choosing a Mentor – we know we do!
