Because people just aren’t willing to pay money for them. Creating a plugin that people will want to pay you money for is science, as much as art.
2 – Finding a good programmer is hard: If you don’t know how to create plugins yourself (I don’t), then you will need to outsource. But guess what? It’s not easy finding a good programmer. Sure, every coder you come accross will tell you that they can do it “withing the budget and in time” – but most of them are lying, or simply overestimate their abilities.
3 – It takes money to create a great plugin: Even if you do find a good programmer to work with, they aren’t going to create the plugin for free – why should they? The plugins I have created have cost me from $2,000 all the way to $5,000 and more. Not chump change!
4 – It takes time to test and refine the plugin: After the plugin is created, you need to beta test it to make sure it works properly on all types of servers. That usually requires you to have access to a group of people who will test the plugin, find any bugs, and also give you ideas to make the plugin even better. The last thing you want to happen is put out a plugin that doesn’t work properly, and that will create a bunch of angry customers.
5 – Writting a great salesletter takes a lot of effort: They say that asking strangers for money (especially over the internet!) is one of the hardest thing you can do. Creating a salesletter that explains the benefits clearly and doesn’t just sound like a hypey pitch, isn’t easy. You need to make the prospect feel excited about the plugin, but not make them think “this is a scam.”
